Award-Winning Winemaker, AUTHOR, law enforcement veteran…

your host for true crime and wine

Matthews is especially proud that his work bridged political divides, enabling him to contribute to major crime-fighting and community-building initiatives across four presidential administrations. To date, he has contributed to numerous local, state, federal, and tribal law enforcement projects addressing terrorism, reducing crime, improving officer safety, and advancing community policing efforts. Matthews has been involved in initiatives such as the DOJ Officer Safety Working Group, the National Officer Suicide Prevention Initiative, and served as Executive Director for Law Enforcement Initiatives at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. He’s authored seven books and gained a reputation as an authority on school safety, mass shooters, and serial killers. John’s “just the facts” approach and in-depth knowledge of criminal behavior made him a sought-out expert commentator for CNN and FOX News. He recalls that during his first meeting with President Obama, the President remarked on having followed Matthews’s honest and straightforward commentary for some time.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Matthews has long pursued a passion for winemaking, producing small batches of wine for family and friends.  In 2015, Cassaro Vineyards was founded in North Texas, named after his Italian-born grandfather, Joseph Cassaro.

John’s unique combination of entrepreneurial endeavors, academic background—holding a BBA and MBA in administrative management and his law enforcement service in one of America’s most dangerous cities placed him in demand throughout the nation. His high-profile arrest of a serial killer certainly contributed to his reputation, but it was his work reducing crime by over 70% in just over two years and encouraging economic development that revitalized North Oak Cliff that propelled him onto the national stage.

Following his time as a beat cop, Matthews was invited to Washington, D.C., to participate in a think tank on innovative law enforcement programs. Inspired to help accelerate the process, he approached the session’s director, offering to complete the entire project and deliver a final report within a month. Though met with initial skepticism, Matthews submitted a comprehensive project report along with a shareable presentation that could be distributed to law Enforcement Agencies across the United States. This initiative led to a slew of requests for Matthews to consult on major law enforcement initiatives nationwide, marking the start of a prolific career in consulting on federal programs and presidential projects.

In the summer of 2018, Cassaro Winery opened of a tasting room in Ovilla, Texas.

In 2024, John celebrated 40 years in law enforcement, receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and the Governor’s office.

Reflecting on his journey from beat cop to White House advisor, television analyst, network true crime expert, and finally, winemaker, Matthews attributes his accomplishments to a steady progression of self-motivation, passion, perseverance, and the unwavering support of his family and friends.
